| This region changed hands before it
came into French possession finally during the Second decade of 18th Century. When the Independence of India became an accomplished fact
on 15th August 1947, there were repercussions here also. On 20th October 1948, large-scale
disturbances broke out. An enraged crowd paraded the streets of Mahe, raided government
offices and buildings and pulled out and burnt records and furniture. On the
morning of 23rd October 1948, the Indian Union flag was hoisted over the
administrative office in the presence of thousands of people. Messengers were
sent to the Government of India to say that the French administration has collapsed and
requesting Government of India to take over the administration. However, on 26th
October 1948, the Cruiser of the French Navy arrived at Mahe. He insisted on
lowering the Indian flag and re-hoisting the French flag. This was done and the Cruisers,
which arrived for the purpose, left suddenly on 31st October 1948. Between April, 1951 and
March 1954 there was no significant development. The fight for freedom got an impetus in
April-May, 1954. It got intensified with sporadic instances of violence and
finally on 1.11.1954 Mahe was handed over to the Government of India. The dejure
transfer took place on 16th August 1962. |
