Right from the ancient times, Karaikal is considered to be a pilgrimage centre. Details regarding some of the places of tourist interest are mentioned below:

Shri Darbaranyeswarar temple in Tirunallar:

Situated about 5 Kms from Karaikal, a temple dedicated to Sri Darbaranyeswarar constructed during the Chola period exists in Tirunallar village of Tirunallar commune. Although the presiding deity is Sri Darbaranyeswarar, Lord Saneeswara Bhagavan who has a separate altar in this temple is very famous. This is the place from where Nalachakravarthy got relieved from the evil influence of Saturn. Once in 2 1/2 years a great Sanipeyarchi festival is celebrated and attended by lakhs of pilgrims from all over India.

Badrakaliyamman temple in Ambagarathur:

To the west of Karaikal in Ambagarathur village of Tirunallar commune, there exists a Badrakaliyamman temple. The temple assumes the name of Goddess Parasakthi who is believed to have killed a rakshasha by name Ambaran who was killing people day-in and day-out. At the time of the killing (vadham) Ambaran was in buffalo form. The place was initially known as Ambaran-urandha-oor meaning victory over Ambaran, which subsequently became Ambagarathur. In the Tamil month of Vaikasi on every second Tuesday at 1.00 P.M. a buffalo was killed in proof of this event. However, buffalo killing was discontinued since 1965, but the pomp and glory of the festival still continues.

Ayiramkaliyamman temple in Tirumalairayanpattianam:

This temple exists in Tirumalairayanpattinam village of Tirumalairayanpattinam commune. It is believed that a pious person of sengunthar community had a dream to collect a Goddess Amman in silver box floating in sea. The next day he,   along with his friends had gone to the sea-shore and in accordance with the dream found the box and in it was the image of Goddess Amman with inscription in palm leaf to indicate that this deity has to be worshipped with 1000 items daily. Perhaps a person who was not able to do this ritual accordingly got rid of the idol. Even after collection from the sea, since such an observance of Pooja with 1000 items could not be conducted daily, the pious people of the locality decided to have the pooja conducted once in 5 years. Accordingly, even today during the Tamil month of Vaikasi, the festival is conducted for 3 days. After the festival, the idol is dismantled part by part and kept back in the box to be opened after another 5 years only. There are many other temples in Karaikal which have architectural and historical importance.
